In a significant diplomatic development, Cambodia and Laos pledged to deepen their Comprehensive and Long-Lasting Strategic Partnership during a high-level visit by Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei HUN Manet to the Lao People’s Democratic Republic from 25 to 26 March 2024.
On 27 Mar 2024, On political cooperation, the two Prime Ministers expressed their commitment to effectively implement the Action Plan for the Comprehensive and Long-Lasting Strategic Partnership.
The talks between Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei HUN Manet and His Excellency Dr. Sonexay SIPHANDONE were fruitful with agreement to ensure peace and prosperity for the two countries, contributing to harmony and development in the region.
Key Agreements and Cooperation
- Energy cooperation: Cambodia welcomed Laos’ provision of electricity and reaffirmed support for green energy trading within ASEAN countries.
- Transport and Connectivity: The sides urged authorities to facilitate people-to-people ties, tourism, and trade by selecting a site for a bridge between Tonle Ropov and Selam Pao as soon as possible.
- Security and Defence: The Prime Ministers agreed to maintain border security and cooperate on transnational crimes, such as drug smuggling and human trafficking.
- Culture, Education, Sports, and Agriculture: The two sides agreed to promote cooperation in these areas and extend a cooperation agreement between the Cambodian Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport and the Lao Ministry of Education and Sports for five years.
The visit aimed to further strengthen bilateral relations and deepen good cooperation in various fields. During his meetings with Lao Leaders, Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei HUN Manet reaffirmed Cambodia’s full support for the Lao chairmanship of ASEAN this year.
