Cambodia and Japan Strengthen Bilateral Ties Amid Regional Cooperation

In a significant diplomatic development, His Excellency SOK Chenda Sophea, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia, had a productive telephone conversation with Her Excellency KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, on 30 October 2023. The call marked the first official exchange between the two foreign ministers since their respective appointments.

The two officials commended each other for their contributions to strengthening Cambodia-Japan relations, particularly in the domains of economy and legal affairs during their previous portfolios. They hailed the remarkable progress in bilateral relations, which was elevated to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership by Japan this year, as both countries celebrate the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

The conversation also highlighted growing cooperation across various sectors, including economic realms. Notable examples include the expansion of AEON Malls and the forthcoming inauguration of Toyota Assembly Plant in Cambodia next year. Both sides reiterated their joint commitment to further strengthening and expanding areas of mutually beneficial cooperation, including politics, defense, trade, investment, good governance, law, and development cooperation.

His Excellency Deputy Prime Minister extended his profound appreciation to the Government and people of Japan for their significant contribution to peace and socio-economic development in Cambodia. Her Excellency Minister KAMIKAWA reaffirmed the Japanese government's steadfast commitment to continuous support for Cambodia's long-term development.

The two sides also exchanged views on regional and international developments, including ASEAN-Japan relations, peacekeeping operations (PKO) and demining training cooperation, as well as the deteriorating situation in Gaza. Her Excellency KAMIKAWA extended profound condolences on the tragic loss of a Cambodian student.

The Japanese government looks forward to welcoming Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei HUN Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia, to the Commemorative Summit for the 50th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation to be held in Tokyo from 16 to 18 December 2023, and the bilateral summit between Samdech Thipadei and His Excellency KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan.

Cambodia and Japan have long been committed to strengthening regional cooperation, particularly through the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The two countries will continue to work together to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the region. With their growing bilateral ties and shared interests, Cambodia and Japan will play an increasingly important role in promoting regional cooperation and addressing global challenges.

In conclusion, the diplomatic exchange between Cambodia and Japan highlights the importance of strong bilateral relations in supporting regional cooperation and promoting peace and development in the Asia-Pacific region.
