Cambodia Calls for Urgent Action to Address Escalating Tensions with Thailand

Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, H.E. Prak Sokhonn, has penned a letter to the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, and other foreign ministers, urging swift action to address the escalating tensions between Cambodia and Thailand.

The letter, dated July 31st, 2025, expresses Cambodia’s sincere appreciation for the U.N.’s principled support for the ceasefire agreement, which was facilitated by key players including former U.S. President Donald J. Trump, Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

However, despite this support, Cambodia remains deeply concerned about recent developments on the ground, particularly the Thai military’s encroachment into Cambodian territory and instances of small arms fire. These actions have heightened tensions and threatened to undermine the fragile progress made towards a ceasefire.

In response, Cambodia is calling on its partners and friends to urge Thailand to fully respect the ceasefire agreement and work towards the swift establishment of an observation mechanism to monitor and verify its implementation. The country remains steadfast in its commitment to uphold international law and the Charters of the United Nations and ASEAN.

The situation has been further complicated by reports that Thai forces have used Saab Gripen fighter jets to conduct precision airstrikes on Cambodian territory, raising concerns about the potential impact on future arms deals with Sweden.

In a recent press briefing, the Spokesperson for Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence reiterated the country’s commitment to implementing the ceasefire agreement and urged Thailand to promptly repatriate the remaining Cambodian troops in its custody. The spokesperson also called for the establishment of an observation mechanism, which will be coordinated by Malaysia as the current Chair of ASEAN.

Cambodia is actively engaging in negotiations to secure the release of 20 of its troops who remain in Thai custody and has proposed that Malaysia, the United States, and China attend an extraordinary session of the General Border Committee (GBC) to facilitate their return.

The situation on the ground remains volatile, with tensions simmering just below the surface. Cambodia’s call for urgent action is a stark reminder of the need for restraint and cooperation between neighboring countries in order to prevent further escalation.

Reiteration of Commitment to Ceasefire Agreement

Cambodia reaffirms its firm commitment to the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement, which came into effect on July 28th, 2025. The country is working proactively with ASEAN member states and concerned partners towards the swift establishment of a credible and impartial observation mechanism.

Urgent Action Required

The international community must take immediate action to address the escalating tensions between Cambodia and Thailand. Cambodia’s call for urgent action underscores the need for restraint, dialogue, and peaceful resolution of the conflict.

In conclusion, the situation on the ground demands attention and cooperation from the international community. Cambodia remains committed to its principles and values, and it is imperative that all parties work towards de-escalation, dialogue, and a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
