In a significant development, Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei HUN Manet of Cambodia met with his Lao counterpart, Dr. Sonexay Siphandone, on the sidelines of the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and Related Summits in Vientiane on October 8, 2024. The bilateral talks marked a strong reaffirmation of their Comprehensive and Long-Lasting Strategic Partnership, established in 2019.
During their meeting, the two Prime Ministers expressed satisfaction with the robust friendship and cooperation between Cambodia and Laos, highlighting the need for regular exchanges at all levels to further boost collaboration in various sectors. They also agreed to convene the 15th meeting of the Cambodia-Laos Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation in the near future.
Trade and tourism were key areas of discussion, with both sides committed to increasing bilateral trade to its full potential, particularly by reactivating Joint Trade Committee meetings. The two governments also pledged to enhance border infrastructure connectivity to facilitate trade and encourage tourist flows between the two countries.
Energy cooperation was another focus area, with both Prime Ministers stressing the importance of energy security and electricity infrastructure. They explored ways to expand green energy supplies between the two countries and the region to contribute to the ASEAN Power Grid.
In addition, the two leaders emphasized the need for strengthened cooperation in border areas, encouraging their relevant authorities to take timely and comprehensive crime-prevention measures to ensure peace and stability.
The Cambodia-Laos Joint Committee on Double Taxation was also finalized, with both sides noting their pleasure at its completion. Dr. Sonexay Siphandone commended Cambodia’s achievements in socio-economic development and regional and international standing.
Samdech Thipadei Prime Minister expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality extended to the Cambodian delegation in Vientiane, reiterating support for the Lao Chairmanship of ASEAN. He also looked forward to the official visit of His Excellency Dr. Sonexay Siphandone to Cambodia in the near future.
This significant meeting underscores the commitment of both countries to strengthen their strategic partnership and cooperation within the context of ASEAN cooperation.
