In a significant development for regional cooperation, Deputy Prime Minister PRAK Sokhonn will lead a Cambodian delegation to the 16th Mekong-Japan Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and the 13th Mekong-Republic of Korea Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, both held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
On 09 Jul 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation announced that His Excellency PRAK Sokhonn will participate in these meetings as Co-Chair of the two events. The meetings are being held on the sidelines of the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meetings and related Meetings in Malaysia.
The 16th Mekong-Japan Foreign Ministers’ Meeting aims to review the progress and implementation of the Mekong-Japan Cooperation Strategy 2024, which was adopted last year at the 15th Mekong-Japan Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Laos. The meeting will also discuss future directions for Mekong-Japan cooperation.
In contrast, the 13th Mekong-Republic of Korea (ROK) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting will focus on assessing the progress of Mekong-ROK cooperation under the Plan of Action 2021-2025 and exchanging views on the strategic direction of the Mekong-ROK Plan of Action 2026-2030.
Cambodia’s participation in these meetings reflects its commitment to regional cooperation and strengthening ties with key partners. The meetings provide an opportunity for Cambodia to engage with Japan and ROK on various issues, including economic development, trade, and security.
