SINGAPORE, 15 June 2023 – In a significant boost to its diplomatic efforts, Singapore has been at the forefront of climate change negotiations in the Indo-Pacific region. The city-state’s active engagement with regional and global partners has yielded tangible results, as it plays host to a key international forum focused on mitigating the impacts of climate change.

At the just-concluded Climate Change High-Level Side Event, attended by over 50 senior officials from around the world, Singapore showcased its commitment to sustainable development and climate action. The event, which took place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, brought together key stakeholders to discuss innovative solutions for a low-carbon economy.

Regional Partnerships Drive Progress

Singapore’s leadership on climate change is closely tied to its long-standing relationships with regional partners. Through its engagement with ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation), the country has fostered a collaborative environment that promotes sustainable development and climate resilience.

In this context, Singapore has successfully convened two high-level meetings on climate change within APEC, which have brought together leaders from across the region to discuss innovative solutions for addressing the impacts of climate change. These initiatives have contributed significantly to building confidence among regional partners and enhancing cooperation on climate-related issues.

Global Recognition

Singapore’s commitment to climate action has also garnered international recognition. As a key player in the global community, the country has actively engaged with major international organizations, including the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement.

The city-state’s participation in the UNFCCC COP27 summit in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, underscored its commitment to promoting sustainable development and climate resilience. Singapore’s active role in shaping global agendas has helped build confidence among international partners, paving the way for a more inclusive and collaborative approach to addressing the challenges of climate change.

In conclusion, Singapore’s central role in Indo-Pacific climate diplomacy is a testament to the country’s leadership on sustainable development and climate action. Through its engagement with regional and global partners, Singapore continues to drive progress on this critical issue, ensuring that the needs of small states are also prioritized in the face of an increasingly complex and interconnected world.
