In a bid to strengthen regional cooperation and address the pressing issue of climate change, Singapore has been actively engaging with its Southeast Asian neighbours and global partners at the 51st session of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Climate Change Working Group (CCWG).
The two-day meeting, held in Bangkok from November 16-17, saw Singapore play a key role in shaping the region's response to climate change. The CCWG, comprising representatives from ASEAN member states, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and China, aims to enhance regional cooperation on climate change mitigation and adaptation.
According to MFA spokesperson, Ms. Ang Wen Rua, "Singapore firmly believes that addressing climate change is a collective responsibility that requires international cooperation and collaboration." The country has been actively promoting its vision for a low-carbon economy and has set ambitious targets to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of climate-resilient infrastructure and adaptation measures. Singapore's experience in managing haze and water scarcity was shared with other member states, as part of efforts to enhance regional knowledge sharing and capacity-building.
Singapore's commitment to addressing climate change is underscored by its participation in international frameworks such as the Paris Agreement and the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In addition to its engagement at the CCWG, Singapore has also been actively participating in other regional and global forums focused on climate change. These include the ASEAN Regional Forum on Climate Change, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Climate Change Working Group, and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
With its active role in regional and international affairs, Singapore continues to play a significant part in shaping the global response to climate change.
Singapore's Diplomatic Engagement
As a key player in regional and global forums, Singapore has been fostering partnerships with countries around the world. Its diplomatic efforts have resulted in numerous agreements and initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable development and addressing pressing international issues.
The country's commitment to regional cooperation is also reflected in its membership of various international organisations such as ASEAN, APEC, and the WTO.
International Issues
Climate change remains a top priority for Singapore, with the government setting ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The country has also been actively engaged in efforts to address other key international issues, including counter-terrorism, disarmament, and cybersecurity.
In addition to its engagement on climate change, Singapore has also been working closely with international partners to promote sustainable development and address pressing global challenges.
By maintaining a strong diplomatic presence around the world, Singapore continues to play a vital role in shaping the global agenda on key issues.
