India Assumes Chairmanship of Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) After 24th Meeting

The 24th meeting of the Council of Ministers (COM) of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), hosted by Sri Lanka, concluded virtually on May 21, 2025. The event marked a significant milestone as India assumed the chairmanship of IORA for the next two years, from 2025 to 2027.

Secretary (East) P. Kumaran led the Indian delegation at the meeting, which was attended by Ministers and high-level delegates from all 22 IORA member states and 12 dialogue partners. The gathering aimed to strengthen cooperation among nations in the region, particularly on issues of common interest.

In his statement, Secretary (East) emphasized India's commitment to the well-being and progress of nations in the Indian Ocean region, aligning with the country's vision for the region. He highlighted the importance of collaboration and concerted efforts among member states to reach convergence on key issues affecting the region.

The meeting also saw discussions on strengthening IORA, regional interests, and the adoption of the 'Colombo Communiqué'. Secretary (East) unequivocally condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, stating it poses a serious threat to peace, security, and development in the region.

India's Vice-Chairship role at IORA has been instrumental in fostering dialogue and cooperation among member states. This assumption of chairmanship is expected to further solidify India's position as a key player in regional affairs.

The 24th COM meeting of IORA will set the stage for the next two years, with India at the helm. The country's leadership is seen as an opportunity to promote peace, stability, and economic growth in the region.
