The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, welcomed H.E. Mr Joao Manuel Goncalves Lourenco, President of the Republic of Angola, at Rashtrapati Bhavan today, marking his first state visit to the country.
On May 3, 2025, this historic visit coincides with the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Angola. The President expressed her felicitation to President Lourenco for assuming the Chair of African Union during India's G20 Presidency, highlighting that Africa has been included as a full member on this important multilateral platform.
The Indian leader also congratulated President Lourenco on his tenure, noting with satisfaction that the African voice is now being heard more prominently. She emphasized that India values its special friendship with African countries, including Angola, and is committed to fostering mutually beneficial partnerships through initiatives such as the India-Africa Forum Summit.
President Murmu acknowledged the crucial role played by Angola in promoting peace, security, and stability in Africa. She also appreciated President Lourenco's strong expression of sympathy and support following a recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir.
Furthermore, the President commended the Indian Diaspora in Angola for acting as a cultural and economic bridge between the two nations. India has long been recognized as a leading voice for developing countries globally, and both leaders agreed on the importance of sustained cooperation between their nations for mutual progress and well-being.
As President Lourenco concludes his first state visit to India, both leaders have reaffirmed their commitment to fostering stronger ties between their countries and working together towards the betterment of the Global South.
