The Biden administration held meetings with European counterparts yesterday to discuss several pressing global issues, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and efforts to limit Iran’s nuclear program.
In a press briefing at the White House, Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that the US has dedicated significant resources to supporting Ukraine, but emphasized that the country cannot remain indefinitely engaged without progress on a peace deal. “We’ve spent three years, billions of dollars supporting the Ukrainian side, and – but now we have other things we have to focus on,” Blinken said.
The administration also discussed its vision for preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, which President Biden has repeatedly stated will not happen. “That is not going to happen,” Blinken said. “We would all prefer a peaceful resolution and a lasting one.”
In separate talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, US officials emphasized the need for constructive communication on key issues. The meeting came after three-and-a-half years of little interaction between the two countries.
According to sources, the discussions with Lavrov were focused on the proposed framework for a ceasefire in Ukraine, which was presented at today’s meeting with Ukrainian officials. While the outline was not made public, it is believed to include key elements that would facilitate a negotiated settlement to the conflict.
The European Union has an important decision to make regarding snapback sanctions against Iran, given the country’s apparent breach of nuclear compliance. US officials expressed hope that talks can continue and lead to a peaceful resolution.
In other news, the White House announced that discussions with Foreign Minister Lavrov were “constructive” and emphasized the importance of communication on key issues. The administration also reaffirmed its commitment to preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.
The meetings come as tensions in the region remain high, with the US and European allies seeking to maintain pressure on Iran while avoiding further escalation.
