Thailand Reiterates Commitment to Promoting International Peace and Security through Multilateralism

In a statement delivered at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Open Debate on 22 Jul 2025, Thailand’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr. Maris Sangiampongsa, reaffirmed his country’s unwavering commitment to the peaceful settlement of disputes as a foundation for international peace and security.

The debate, convened by Pakistan as the President of the Security Council for July 2025, aimed to promote international peace and security through multilateralism and peaceful settlement of disputes. In his statement, the Minister highlighted three key points that underscored Thailand’s approach to conflict resolution.

Firstly, he emphasized the importance of adhering to the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter, which outline a broad spectrum of peaceful means for dispute resolution. He noted that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to disputes and that each situation requires a tailored response.

Secondly, the Minister advocated for strengthening the capacity-building efforts of the United Nations (UN) to promote peace and non-violence. He stressed the importance of empowering regional organizations like the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to play a more significant role in conflict prevention and resolution.

Thirdly, he highlighted the collaboration between the UN and ASEAN, which has been recognized for its significant contribution to regional peace and stability. The Minister emphasized the importance of confidence-building measures and preventive diplomacy in promoting regional stability.

Thailand’s commitment to multilateralism and peaceful settlement of disputes is reflected in its long-standing membership in various international organizations, including the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) and the East Asia Summit (EAS). These forums provide a platform for Southeast Asian countries to engage in dialogue and cooperation on regional security issues.

The Minister’s statement also underscores Thailand’s support for the UN’s efforts to promote peace and security through multilateralism. As a key player in the ASEAN community, Thailand recognizes the importance of regional collaboration in addressing common security challenges.

In conclusion, Thailand’s reaffirmation of its commitment to promoting international peace and security through multilateralism is a testament to its role as a responsible and engaged member of the international community. By emphasizing the importance of tailored approaches to dispute resolution and strengthening regional cooperation, Thailand demonstrates its dedication to fostering a more peaceful and stable world.
