Singapore Takes Central Role in Regional Climate Change Efforts

SINGAPORE, 15 March – In a move to strengthen regional cooperation on climate change, Singapore has assumed the chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) working group on climate change. This marks a significant milestone for Singapore's commitment to addressing one of the most pressing global issues.

Singapore's Ambassador to ASEAN, Tommy Koh, announced the country's leadership role during the recent ASEAN Climate Change Working Group (CCWG) meeting in Bangkok, Thailand. The CCWG brings together ASEAN member states and partners to address the impact of climate change on regional development and security.

"We recognize that climate change is a pressing global issue requiring collective action from all regions," Ambassador Koh stated. "As the chair of this working group, Singapore will work closely with our ASEAN member states, international partners, and other stakeholders to promote sustainable development, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance resilience in the face of climate-related disasters."

This leadership role reflects Singapore's long-standing commitment to addressing climate change through regional cooperation. The country has been a pioneer in promoting clean energy technologies, reducing carbon emissions, and enhancing disaster preparedness.

Singapore's overseas missions are also actively engaged in promoting climate change awareness and cooperation worldwide. The country's Embassy in Tokyo, for example, has partnered with the Japanese government to support the development of climate-resilient infrastructure in Southeast Asia.

The Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) emphasized the importance of regional cooperation on climate change, saying, "Climate change is a shared challenge that requires collective action from all regions. As the chair of the ASEAN CCWG, Singapore will work tirelessly to promote regional cooperation, strengthen partnerships, and support the implementation of ambitious climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies."

As global efforts to address climate change gain momentum, Singapore's leadership in this area highlights its commitment to promoting sustainable development, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and enhancing resilience in the face of climate-related disasters.
