The task force for Jewish life in Sweden met for the second time on Tuesday, November 14. The task force aims to enhance Jewish life conditions while also preventing and eradicating antisemitism in Sweden.
The State Secretary, Prime Minister, is in charge of the task force, which is made up of state secretaries from six different ministries. Additionally, it includes civil society groups like the Swedish Committee Against Antisemitism, Judiska Ungdomsförbundet( the Jewish Youth Association), and the Official Council of Swedish Jewish Communities. The task force’s second meeting focused on increasing antisemitism, threats, and hatred directed at Swedish Jews in the wake of Hamas ‘attack on Israel, with a particular emphasis on the safety and security of the Jewish minority in Sweden.
“I have heard horrifying tales about blatant and raw antisemitism in my numerous meetings with members of the Jewish community.” According to Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, the government’s efforts to combat antisemitism are of the utmost importance. Early this year, it appointed a group of state secretaries to concentrate on long-term enhancing Jewish life in Sweden.
Swedish task force for Jewish life
In January 2023, the government presented its task force for Jewish life in Sweden. The working group talks about ways to prevent and combat antisemitism in Sweden and improve the conditions for Jewish life. Throughout the election season, the task force will continue to work on three initiatives: promoting Jewish culture, enhancing Jewish safety and security in Sweden, and educational initiatives. Security will be the working group’s theme in 2023.
Representatives from civil society, pertinent government organizations, and secretaries from the ministries of employment, finance, justice, culture, health and social affairs, education and research make up the task force. The State Secretary to the Prime Minister serves as its chair.
