Alexei Overchuk meets with European Commission’s Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans

Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk, head of the Russian delegation, had a meeting with the European Commission’s Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans on the sidelines of the COP 26 UN Climate Change Conference.

The parties discussed
approaches by the Russian Federation and the European Union towards overcoming
global climate challenges, prospects for expanded cooperation in the climate
and energy spheres and other aspects of Russia-EU relations.

Mr Overchuk and Mr
Timmermans exchanged opinions on possible cooperation on the Sakhalin carbon-trading
experiment and the elaboration of common approaches towards recording and trading
carbon units and their mutual recognition.

The Russian party believes
that trans-border regulation matters should be addressed in a multilateral
format.

The parties agreed to
maintain contacts on climate issues and discussed the possibility of continuing
their dialogue in early 2022.
