JAMAICA RECEIVES “ENDURING FRIENDSHIP” SCULPTURE FROM SOUTH KOREA TO MARK 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS

The sculpture was unveiled during a Handing-over Ceremony at the Ministry’s Headquarters in Downtown Kingston, on Thursday, October 20.
Minister Johnson Smith also lauded the Jamaican artist and sculptor, Mrs. Lisa Lindo, as one of Jamaica’s finest artists whose “latest work will enhance our space at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade.”
The Government of Jamaica has received a sculpture titled “Enduring Friendship” as a gift from the Republic of Korea to mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade welcomed the work of art as a “fitting testimony to the strength of the relationship and the dynamism of the cooperation between the two countries.” According to the Foreign Minister, “It exemplifies the resilience of our peoples and their steadfast determination to ensure that our partnership transcends many more decades of fruitful and significant engagement.”
In expressing appreciation, the Minister acknowledged Mr. Baejin Lim, the Chargé d’ Affaires at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea and his team for what she describes as “their vision and unwavering commitment to preserving Jamaica/Korea relations.”
The sculpture was unveiled during a Handing-over Ceremony at the Ministry’s Headquarters in Downtown Kingston, on Thursday, October 20.
In describing the piece, Mrs. Lindo shared that the Mu-gung-hwa or Rose of Sharon Flower, meaning “eternal blossom that never fades” depicted in the work, represents “the resilient spirit of the Korean people.  Additionally, the red-billed Streamer tail hummingbird or Doctor bird, which is endemic to Jamaica, is shown as feeding on and pollinating one of the six flowers that represent the six-decade relationship between the two nations. Combining these symbols of national pride shows our foundation is strong.”
 
The Chargé d’ Affaires, noted that “this symbiotic representation of Korea and Jamaica’s friendship will be maintained and will remain relevant for years to come. I can say that both South Korea and Jamaica have witnessed fruitful outcomes in our bilateral cooperation.”
