The socio-economic context of Latin America and the Caribbean in view of the post-COVID-19 recovery calls for renewed international cooperation

Press Release

New York, February 14, 2022. Cuba participated today in the virtual meeting entitled: “Socio-economic context of Latin America and the Caribbean in the face of a post-COVID-19 recovery“, which was honored by the presence of Ms. Alicia Bárcena, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, ECLAC.

At the meeting convened by the Latin American and Caribbean Regional Group, GRULAC, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Pedro Luis Pedroso Cuesta, stressed that in light of the manifold global and regional challenges, heightened by the serious emergency posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for greater and renewed international cooperation, the strengthening of multilateralism, solidarity and integration among our peoples becomes evident as never before.

Mr. Pedroso mentioned the recent ECLAC report entitled: “How to finance sustainable development: recovery from the effects of COVID-19 in Latin America and the Caribbean“, which urges us to seek regional integration policies to confront the global asymmetries that influence recovery policies in Latin America and the Caribbean.

He highlighted among the relevant ECLAC proposals, the redistribution of global liquidity to all vulnerable countries that need it, regardless of their income level, as well as the reform of the international debt architecture and support for innovative instruments to improve debt payment capacity and increase resilience.

Pedroso commented that other formulations refer to the establishment of a Caribbean Resilience Fund, but also the hurricane clauses, which should become a more prominent feature of debt relief initiatives for vulnerable countries.
