Cuba supports Nicaragua’s decision to withdraw from OAS

Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba supports Nicaragua’s decision to denounce the Charter of the Organization of American States (OAS) and to resign from this Organization.

The OAS has remained silent on many occasions when coups d’état have taken place in our region. It has also been an accomplice to attempts at isolation and military interventions and has supported economic aggressions.

This Organization was the servile instrument of the United States to orchestrate the coup d’état designed by that country in the Plurinational State of Bolivia, which included the use of violence against elected officials and institutions.

Hemispheric relations require a profound transformation based on the strict respect for International Law and the United Nations Charter, including the principles of self-determination and independence of peoples, non-interference in internal affairs and sovereign equality.

Cuba ratifies its support and solidarity with the Nicaraguan people and government. Only regional unity and integration, and the common commitment to the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as Zone of Peace, signed in Havana in January 2014, show the only possible path.
