On saturday, february 26, 2022, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation, His Excellency Ambassador Albert SHINGIRO and the Ambassador of the Popular Republic of China in Burundi, Mrs. ZHAO Jiangping exchanged letters on the project of rehabilitation, extension and modernization of Melchior NDADAYE International Airport in Burundi.
Indeed, within the framework of strengthening relationships and cooperation between Burundi and China, at the request of the Government of the Republic of Burundi, the Chinese Government agrees to execute the draft of Rehabilitation Agreement, extension and modernization of Melchior NDADAYE International Airport in Burundi. This project concerns the renovation of the runway, the ramp and the existing parking areas of the Airport runway Zone, construction of certain parking areas, the shoulder, a control tower and an administrative building for traffic management. aerial and equip aerial, communication, meteorological and surveillance equipment. The related costs will be settled within the framework of the donation without counterpart agreed in the Agreement on Economic and Technical Cooperation between the two Governments, as declared by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation and the Ambassador of the Popular Republic of China in Burundi.
It should be noted that the execution of this project was delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
