On tuesday, january 11, 2022, the National Assembly analyzed and adopted the bill on the ratification by the Republic of Burundi of the protocol on the privileges and immunities of the East African Community signed in Arusha in april 2015.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation Ambassador Albert SHINGIRO is invited to the” Palais des Congrès” in Kigobe to present the explanatory memorandum and answer any questions from deputies on this bill.
This protocol concerns:
– The immunity of property, assets and persons employed in jumuiya and their privileges;
– Protection of community funds;
– facilities relating to official communication;
– jumuiya tax exemptions;
. The issue relating to the low number of Burundian people among the Staff of jumuiya
came back to the table.
Minister Albert SHINGIRO spoke of language barriers, but also that Burundi integrated after Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
Four jumuiya Countries (Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda) have already ratified this protocol. By joining them, Burundi will have created and maintained favorable conditions for the establishment of Community organs on its territory.
After analysis, the bill on the ratification by the Republic of Burundi of the Protocol on the privileges and immunities of the East African Community signed in Arusha in april 2015 was unanimously adopted by 108 Voices / 108.
