Bulgaria is elected in the Bureau of the Human Rights Council

The Human Rights Council elected H. E. Ambassador Yuri Sterk, Permanent representative of the Republic of Bulgaria, to serve as its Vice President for a one-year term in 2021, representing the Group of Eastern European States (EEG).

The Republic of Bulgaria was elected among the 47 member states of the Human Rights Council for the term 2019 – 2021. It is for the first time that Bulgaria serves as a member since the establishment of the Council in 2006.

The election of Ambassador Yuri Sterk for the position of Vice-President attests to the active role of our country during the previous two years of membership in the principal UN human rights body and will contribute to further advance the reputation and the influence of Bulgaria in multilateral fora.

The Permanent Representative of Bulgaria, H.E. Ambassador Yuri Sterk, will serve in the Bureau of the Human Rights Council alongside the Ambassador of Fiji (HRC President) and the Ambassadors of the Bahamas, the Ambassador of the Sudan and the Ambassador of the Netherlands (HRC Vice Presidents).
