Foreign Minister Meets British Ambassador

KABUL – Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Mohammad Haneef Atmar met with the British Ambassador to Kabul Sir Laurie Bristow to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and the fight against the coronavirus pandemic in Afghanistan.

Recalling the sacrifices made by Afghanistan and the UK to attain the common achievements over the last two decades, particularly the rights of women, children, minorities, and freedom of expression, the British Ambassador assured Minister Atmar of the UK’s continued support to uphold and strengthen the hard-won gains within the new chapter of relations between Afghanistan and the world.

Referring to the escalation of violence by the Taliban, the Foreign Minister termed the role of the UK as important and valuable in strengthening international and regional consensus for the success of the Afghan Peace Process and the continuation of international cooperation to reinforce and equip the Afghan armed forces following the withdrawal of the resolute support forces.

The British ambassador called for provision of legal facilitation for a number of British troops to remain in Afghanistan to ensure the security of the British embassy and diplomats.

Minister Atmar and the British Ambassador, while expressing concern over the spread of the new wave of the Coronavirus in Afghanistan, emphasized the need to provide health services to areas under the Taliban control.
