Statement of New Cohort of U. S. Science Envoys

The U. S. Department of State offers selected seven distinguished researchers to serve as U. Ersus. Science Envoys in January 2023: Dr . Drew Harvell, Dr . Jessica Gephart, Dr . Christine Kreuder Johnson, Doctor LaShanda Korley, Dr . Prineha Narang, Ms. Frances Seymour, and Dr . Kyle Whyte. Through the Science Envoy System, eminent U. S. scientists and engineers leverage their particular expertise and networks in order to forge connections and recognize opportunities for sustained worldwide cooperation to advance solutions to distributed challenges, to champion innovation, and to demonstrate America’s scientific leadership and technical ingenuity.
Frances Seymour   is an expert on tropical forests and climate change. She is a Distinguished Senior Fellow at the World Resources Institute, Chair the Board of the Structures for REDD+ Transactions, and it is lead author of the book,   Why Forests? Why Now? The Science, Economics, and Politics associated with Tropical Forests and Weather Change .   Seymour has lived and worked in Indonesia for 11 years, including six yrs as Director General from the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), for which the lady was awarded France’s Order of Agricultural Merit.   She holds an Meters. P. A. from Princeton University and a B. T. from UNC-Chapel Hill.
Christine Kreuder Johnson   is a Professor of Epidemiology and Ecosystem Health and Director of the EpiCenter for Disease Dynamics in the University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medication.   Her work will be committed to transdisciplinary research to characterize the impacts associated with environmental change on animal and human health and guide public policy to mitigate pandemic risks.   She was elected to the National Academy associated with Medicine for pioneering approaches to surveillance of emerging illnesses at the animal-human interface plus investigating environmental and climate-related drivers for spillover of viruses.   She is furthermore an Honorary Fellow from the American Association for the Development of Science.
LaShanda Korley   is a Distinguished Teacher in Materials Science and Engineering and Chemical plus Biomolecular Engineering at the University or college of Delaware and is a Fellow of the American Actual Society (APS), American Chemical substance Society Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Architectural (ACS PMSE), and the United states Institute for Medical and Natural Engineering (AIMBE).   The lady also is the Director of the Energy Frontier Research Center—the Center for Plastics Development (CPI)—funded by the Department of one’s.   Korley is a global  leader in using biologically inspired and sustainable concepts for the molecular design, manufacture, and valorization of functional polymeric systems.
Like their own 23 predecessors, these famous scientists are approved by the particular Secretary of State. They travel as private citizens to engage internationally with civil society as well as government interlocutors.   Science Envoys assist inform the Department associated with State, other U. T. government agencies, and the medical community about opportunities to get science and technology cooperation.   The 2023 cohort was selected because of their knowledge in key issues dealing with the world today and will focus on these priority areas during their service which include: Ocean Conservation and Marine Protected Places; Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing; One Health and Zoonotic Diseases; Plastic Pollution; Quantum Information Science and Technologies; Nature-Based Solutions to Climate Modify; and, the Nexus associated with Environmental Science and Local Knowledge.
Jessica Gephart   is an Assistant Professor in Environmental Science at American University.   Dr . Gephart received the girl Ph. D. in Environmental Science from the University of Virginia and completed the postdoctoral fellowship at the Nationwide Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center.   Her research focuses on the particular intersection of seafood globalization and environmental change, analyzing how seafood trade hard disks distant environmental impacts, and also how environmental shocks interrupt seafood trade.   Her work brings together global industry data, local consumption data, and environmental impact data to understand the opportunities and risks of seafood globalization for sustainable production and food security.
Drew Harvell   is Professor Emerita of Cornell University, Affiliate Teachers University of Washington, and Fellow of the Ecological Modern society of America.   Dr . Harvell’s research on durability of the oceans has taken her from the coral reefs of the Caribbean and Pacific to the cold waters of the Western.   Her current analysis focuses on health of top predators and seagrass meadows in the transboundary waters from the Salish Sea.   Her recent book, Ocean Outbreak, details infectious epidemics within the ocean and solutions that benefit people and biodiversity.   Her awards include the Cornell SUNY Chancellors Prize for Excellence, Ecological Modern society of America Sustainability Prize, Seattle Aquarium Conservation Award, Prose Award (Ocean Outbreak), National Outdoor Book Honor ( A Sea of Glass ).

Kyle Whyte   is a professor in the environmental justice specialization at the University of Michigan’s School for Environment plus Sustainability.   He is founding Faculty Director of the Tishman Center for Social Justice and the Environment and Primary Investigator of the Energy Collateral Project.   Dr . Whyte serves on the White Home Environmental Justice Advisory Authorities and as the Chapter Business lead Author for the Tribes plus Indigenous Peoples chapter from the U. S. National Climate Assessment.   His analysis focuses on Indigenous peoples’ rights and knowledge in weather change and conservation preparing, education, and policy.   He is an enrolled person in the Citizen Potawatomi Nation.
Prineha Narang   is a Professor plus Howard Reiss Chair within Physical Sciences at UCLA where she leads an interdisciplinary group in quantum science and technology.   Prior to moving to UCLA, she was an Associate Professor of Computational Components Science at Harvard University.   Before starting on the Harvard faculty, Dr . Narang has been an Environmental Fellow with Harvard, and worked as a research scholar in condensed matter theory at the Ma Institute of Technology (MIT).   She received an M. S. and Ph. D. in Applied Physics from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).   Narang’s work has been recognized by several honors, including APS’ Nancy Goeppert Mayer Award and the Mildred Dresselhaus Prize.
