Secretary Antony J. Blinken and Qatari Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani Before Their Meeting

DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER AL-THANI:  Well, first I would like to tell my friend, Mr. Blinken, the Secretary of State, I am very happy to meet with you here in Munich in this challenging period for all of us, but we really look forward to our discussion and to continue our cooperation and strengthening the relationship between the two countries and working on different issues, discussing different matters.  Of course, the situation in Ukraine is keeping you busy and we commend all the diplomatic talks that you are taking.  And also I think this will represent a good (inaudible) for us to discuss the developments of Afghanistan and the JCPOA.

SECRETARY BLINKEN:  Well, thank you so much.  And I have to say, Mohammed, we’ve been close partners over the last year.  We’re constantly on the phone or seeing each other in one place or another.  But mostly I wanted to say how pleased the President was with the Amir’s visit and the work that we’re doing together, the United States and Qatar, in so many different places, but, of course, starting with the invaluable partnership that we have when it comes to Afghanistan and the work that you’ve done and continue to do there.  We’re grateful for it.

But the work that our two countries are doing together is in many ways increasingly global, so I think we’re going to cover the waterfront, including the Ukraine situation.  So I’m glad we got a chance to catch up here in Munich.  Thank you.  Thanks, everyone.
