Iceland’s National Day

On behalf of the Government of the United States of America, I send best wishes to the people of Iceland as you celebrate your National Day.

The United States and Iceland have a shared commitment to fundamental freedoms, human rights, and democracy, the cornerstones of our relationship since the U.S. recognized Iceland’s independence in 1944.  In particular, we acknowledge Iceland’s impressive record and advocacy for the advancement of women’s rights, and we look forward to continuing our work together on global human rights priorities, including at the UN Human Rights Council.

The United States values our cooperation on Arctic issues.  We appreciated Iceland’s strong leadership as the chair of the Arctic Council, and we look forward to even closer collaboration on pressing issues, including the climate crisis.  We greatly value our strong cooperation in NATO on Transatlantic security, and we welcomed the 70th anniversary of the U.S.-Icelandic bilateral defense agreement, which underscored our relationship as steadfast Allies and partners for peace and prosperity in the Euro-Atlantic area and around the globe.

I very much appreciated the hospitality shown to me during my recent visit to Iceland, and I look forward to the continued strengthening of our relationship.
