UN conference concludes with ‘historic’ deal to protect a third from the world’s biodiversity

“Now is our chance to shoreline up and strengthen the internet of life, so it can carry the full weight of generations to come, ” she added.   Elizabeth Mrema, Executive Secretary of the UN Biodiversity Convention, welcomed the development.  

‘Strengthen the web of life’ 

Mr. Steiner underlined commitment to “turning this formula into reality” through the ‘UNDP Nature Pledge’, which will assistance more than 140 countries.   The Framework, and its associated package of targets, goals and financing “represents but a first step in resetting our relationship with the organic worl d, ” said Inger Andersen, Executive Director at the UN Atmosphere Programme ( UNEP ), speaking throughout the closing plenary.   Twenty-three countries, led by Colombia and supported by Germany, signed a declaration establishing the Accelerator Relationship to support governments in quick tracking implementation of their Nationwide Biodiversity Strategies and Actions Plans (NBSAPs).  

Protection plus restoration 

COP15 was initially set to be held within Kunming, China, in Oct 2020 but was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.   COP15 also saw the particular launch of a platform to help countries to ramp up implementation of the Framework.   The Gas Partnership was launched on Time 2 of the High-Level Section at COP15.   “This agreement means people all over the world can hope for real progress to halt biodiversity loss plus protect and restore the lands and seas in a manner that safeguards our planet and respects the rights of indigenous peoples and local towns, ” he said.   Aspires include facilitating access to economic and technical support, developing institutional capacity tailored to different ranges and national needs, plus promoting dialogue.   “Urgent action is needed to, not only jumpstart implementation of the new global biodiversity framework, but also to continue to accelerate and upscale implementation of NBSAPs even as we work together towards realizing the shared vision of living in harmony with nature and securing a sustainable future for all ” she said.  

Accelerating action 

The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework also aims to slice food waste in half.   Speaking to reporters in an end-of-year press meeting in New York, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said the agreement showed that “we are finally starting to form a serenity pact with nature”, urging all countries to deliver on their promises.   “Actions that we consider for nature are activities to reduce poverty; they are activities to achieve the sustainable development goals; they are actions to improve human health. ”  “Biodiversity is interconnected, intertwined, and indivisible with individual life on Earth. Our societies and our economies rely on healthy and functioning environments. There is no sustainable development without biodiversity . There can be no stable climate without biodiversity. ”  The head of the EL Development Programme ( UNDP ), Achim Steiner, described the agreement as “historic” , urging countries to consider it forward.   Colombia and Germany, together with the EL Biodiversity Convention, UNEP and UNDP, will assist with the style, development, structuring, operationalization plus monitoring of the mechanism.   “We are ready for action. UNDP is there to deliver the systemic changes that can change the needle on our nature crisis, ” he said.
