Türkiye: UN relief chief fulfills families affected by devastating earthquake

EL teams are already on the ground, and more than 130 countries have dispatched responders, sniffer dogs, experts and other personnel. The UN plus partners will also launch is of interest for the two countries. For Mister. Griffiths, the next phase will be to take care of those affected by the tragedy.

Hope for survivors

  Meanwhile, the head of the World Health Business ( WHO ), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, arrived in Aleppo, Syria, upon Saturday. In a separate twitter update, Tedros recounted how he met two babies, Nour and Omar, who lost their parents in the earthquake.   Mr. Griffiths is expected to visit the UN-authorised cross-border operation to Syria in the south of Türkiye on Sunday before travelling there.

Humanitarian support

Within a video on his Twitter, Mister. Griffiths said “I hope what we will see is the same kind of generous, immediate and urgent international response to humanitarian education needs that we have seen to people organizations helping the people of those cities to rescue the particular living from the dead. ”  It is estimated that over 20, 000 people have died in the double earthquake, which struck southeastern Türkiye plus northern Syria early on Monday morning.   “I’m heartbroken to see the conditions survivors are facing – freezing weather and extremely limited access to shelter, meals, water, heat and medical care, ” he wrote in the post on his official Twitter account. “And I’ve met some of them already today, ” he or she said, “people who’ve dropped their homes, whose kids don’t have schools to go to, who have no food, who have necessary, who depend on the generosity of the Turkish people, the particular Turkish government and the global community. ” He or she praised the courage of individuals, including parents, who are operating round the clock in efforts to rescue their families and children from the rubble – “hoping for one more sound, for one more person to survive. ” He met with households left homeless by the tragedy and listened to their stories of shock and devastation.   “There has never been an international response, the Turkish response, to a organic disaster, as we see within these terrible days, ” said Mr. Griffiths.

Heartbreaking conditions

“I am right here to make sure that these people also are not really forgotten, ” he said. Millions more have been left homeless, including Syrians displaced by the 12-year war in their homeland plus thousands of refugees who have fled across the border. The EL relief chief also spoke with search and save teams as they carried out their operations in the devastated central parts of the city, amid collapsed buildings with excavation products digging through the debris. Mr. Griffiths was speaking in the European city of Kahramanmaraş, where recuperation efforts are ongoing within frigid temperatures.
