Status of Jerusalem Cannot Be Modified by Unilateral Actions, Secretary-General Stresses in Message to Cairo Conference

Subsequent is the text of UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ video message to the High-Level Meeting on Supporting the City associated with Jerusalem and its Population, within Cairo today: The United Nations remains devoted to help Israelis and Palestinians chart a credible route forward:   Towards an end of the occupation; towards 2 States living side by side with Jerusalem as the capital of both; towards lasting security, peace and dignity for all.   Thank you.   Shukran. Jerusalem — Al-Quds is not only a cherished home for so many — it also holds a unique place in the hearts of millions of Muslims, Jews and Christian believers the world over. As we have seen time and again, what happens in Jerusalem reverberates globally — and stress, incitement and violence frequently spill into wider lack of stability. It is therefore imperative that all parties exercise restraint and avoid provocations, inflammatory actions plus rhetoric.   I am very concerned by the unilateral initiatives that we have seen in recent days. The position of the United Nations is apparent:   The status associated with Jerusalem cannot be altered simply by unilateral actions, including negotiation activities in occupied Eastern Jerusalem; it can only be resolved through negotiations between the parties. I allowed the initiative of the Little league of Arab States in convening this conference to pay attention to the challenges faced by the Palestinian population in Jerusalem.   I share your own deep concerns. Jerusalem’s demographic plus historical character must be maintained — and the status quo on the Holy Sites must be upheld, in line with the special role of the Hashemite Kingdom of Michael jordan. Excellencies, Secretary-General Aboul Gheit, ladies and gentlemen,
