Speaking ahead of the vote, US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield called the CSW the premiere UN body for promoting gender equal rights and empowering women. Its 45 members are usually elected by ECOSOC , based on equitable geographical distribution, and provide for four years.
‘Serious concern’ over Iran’s actions
The CSW meets annually in March at UN Headquarters in New York and is described as the biggest gathering of gender equality advocates in the world. The girl recalled that Mahsa Amini was accosted by the “morality police” in Iran’s capital, Tehran, on 13 September, who accused her associated with wearing her headscarf incorrectly. “We know she was slain for the crime of being a lady. And for too long, for too often, this was not such an uncommon thing in Iran, ” said Ms. Thomas-Greenfield. “It is not at all unexpected that the United States is taking such unlawful action against Iran, provided its long-standing hostility towards the Iranian people, but if performed, it would be exceedingly dangerous to the UN system integrity, ” he said.
Remembering Mahsa Amini
Iran “categorically rejected and strongly condemned” the draft resolution, said Amir Saeid Jalil Iravani, the country’s Ambassador, speaking before the vote. The United States introduced the resolution, which received 29 votes in favour and eight against, with 16 nations abstaining. The record expressed serious concern over the Iranian Government’s actions since September 2022 “to continually undermine and increasingly suppress the human rights of women plus girls”, and “often by using excessive force”. The young woman has been reportedly beaten on the way to custody. She fell in to a coma and died 3 days later.
Iran rejects resolution
“It cannot do its important work if it is being undermined from within, ” she said. “Iran’s membership right now is an ugly stain over the Commission’s credibility. ” The CSW was established in 1946.
About the CSW
The Ambassador commended Iranian activists, both in the room and around the world, for their courage, foresight, surrender, and leadership. The development comes in the particular wake of the country’s raw crackdown on protests contacting for justice for Mahsa Amini, the 22-year-old girl who died in police custody in September.
