Secretary-General Appoints Elizabeth Maruma Mrema of United Republic associated with Tanzania Deputy Executive Movie director of United Nations Environment Programme

Ms. Mrema holds a Master of Law degree from Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada, the postgraduate diploma in global relations and diplomacy through the Centre of Foreign Relationships and Diplomacy in Dar-es-Salaam, United Republic of Tanzania, and a Bachelor of Legislation from the University of Dar-es-Salaam.   She is fluent in British and Swahili. Ms. Mrema has since 2020 served as Executive Secretary of the Secretariat of the United Nations Conference on Biological Diversity based in Montreal, Canada. She earlier served as Acting Professional Secretary of the Convention upon Biological Diversity Secretariat and as Director of the Law Department at UNEP in Nairobi, Kenya, as well as Executive Admin of the Convention on Migratory Species Secretariat based in Bonn, Germany.   With over 20 years of experience at the United Nations, Ms. Mrema brings to the position extensive experience in worldwide environmental law and policy-making, implementation of environmental plus sustainable development programmes, plus a deep knowledge in the management and administration of multilateral environmental processes. Before joining UNEP within 1994, Ms. Mrema caused the United Republic associated with Tanzania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Assistance as the Counsellor/Senior Legal Counsel.   During her time with the Ministry, she also lectured in public international law and conference diplomacy at the United Republic of Tanzania’s Centre meant for Foreign Relations and Diplomacy. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres today announced the appointment of Elizabeth Maruma Mrema of the United Republic of Tanzania as Deputy Professional Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Ms. Mrema will succeed Joyce Msuya of the United Republic associated with Tanzania who was appointed since Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Crisis Relief Coordinator in the Office for that Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and to whom the Secretary-General is grateful for her dedication and dedicated service.   The Secretary-General also wishes to extend his appreciation to the Movie director of the Corporate Services Division of UNEP, Sonja Leighton-Kone, who will continue to serve as Performing Deputy Executive Director till Ms. Mrema assumes it.
