Lebanon: Irish peacekeeper killed, three others injured

Another Irish member of the dependant who was injured, is in vital condition. The UN Special Coordinator, Joanna Wronecka, tweeted the girl condolences, and said that “a quick and thorough investigation to determine the facts of this heartbreaking incident is crucial. ”

Investigation launched

The mission said it had begun coordinating with the Lebanese Armed Forces over the issue, and launched an immediate analysis. UNIFIL said the incident took place in Al-Aqbieh, “just outside” the mission’s area of procedures in south Lebanon. The mission offered the deepest condolences to the close friends, family, and colleagues from the peacekeeper who died, plus said all were hopeful “for a full and fast recovery for those injured. ” According to news reports, and details released by Irish Government ministers, a aggressive crowd surrounded the armoured vehicle in which the peacekeepers had been travelling, on their way to the Lebanese capital, Beirut.
