Guterres: Put human rights at the heart of efforts to reverse today’s damaging trends

“Human rights are the foundation for human dignity, and the cornerstone of peaceful, inclusive, fair, equal and prosperous societies, ” said Mr. Guterres.   This eyesight is further reflected within the The Common Agenda report, with its charm for a renewed social agreement, anchored in human legal rights.   Meanwhile, t rust in institutions is certainly evaporating , especially among young people, while the COVID-19 pandemic has led to improved levels of violence against women and girls.  

Unprecedented interlocking challenges 

He said the 75th anniversary of the milestone Universal Declaration on Human Rights next year must be an opportunity for action .   Mr. Guterres reminded that two years ago, he or she issued a Call to Action which puts human rights on the centre of solutions to the challenges facing the global community.   The annual commemoration celebrates the UN Common Assembly’s adoption of the Universal Declaration associated with Human Rights on 10 December 1948.  

Reignite global commitment 

“And we are only beginning to grasp the threat posed to human rights simply by some new technologies, ” he added.   “These trying times call for a reignition of our commitment to all individual rights – civil, cultural, economic, political and social. ”  Racism, intolerance and elegance are running rampant, the particular UN chief continued, and new human rights problems are emerging from what he called “the triple planetary crisis” of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution .   The world is currently facing unparalleled and interlocking challenges to human rights, the EL chief said, such as increased hunger and poverty, diminishing civic space, and a “dangerous decline” in media independence and the safety of journalists.  

Universality of individual rights 

“They certainly are a unifying force and a rallying cry. They reflect the most fundamental thing we all share – our common humanity . ”  “I urge Member States, civil society, the particular private sector and others to place human rights at the heart associated with efforts to reverse nowadays damaging trends, ” he or she said.   “On this Human Rights Day, we all reaffirm the universality and indivisibility of all rights, even as we stand up for human rights for all. ”
