Guterres condemns recent deadly equipped group attacks in eastern DR Congo

Mr. Guterres also called upon all parties to help humanitarian access to affected areas and to ensure the defense of civilians and regard for international humanitarian regulation.  
 
He also underlined the particular UN’s ongoing commitment to support the Congolese government and people in their efforts to bring about peace and stability in the east of the country.   MONUSCO chief Bintou Keita briefed the UN Security Council in New York on Friday.

“He welcomes the decision of the Congolese authorities to investigate these incidents with a view in order to bringing those found responsible to justice. ” Mr. Guterres has strongly condemned the attacks, which occurred on 29 plus 30 November in the towns of Kishishe and Bambo, located in Rutshuru territory, North Kivu province, in the risky eastern part of the country At least 131 civilians were killed, including 17 women and 12 children, and eight others were wounded.  

End hostilities now

“The Secretary-General expresses their deepest condolences to the families of the victims and desires a swift recovery towards the injured, ” UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said within a statement on Fri. “The Secretary-General desires the M23 and all other armed groups immediately cease hostilities and disarm unconditionally, ” the statement continued. Meanwhile, the UN’s human legal rights office in the DRC, and its peacekeeping operation there, MONUSCO , can continue to support the government during these efforts.   The attacks are the newest in a series of violence caused on civilians by armed groups in eastern DRC. She told ambassadors that the security circumstance in eastern DRC “has deteriorated dramatically” in the past weeks.
