Report: Human Rights Day, Dec 2022: summary of Lord Ahmad’s speech

Lord Ahmad ended by paying respect to human rights defenders, the ultimate guardians of equality and freedom, and by increasing his heartfelt thanks to everybody who works with the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Workplace to champion human legal rights – for their creativity, tenacity, and unwavering resilience. This individual stressed that together we can change the world for the better, and secure “dignity, freedom, and justice for all”.

Lord Ahmad began by reflecting on the theme of Human Rights Day 2022: ‘Dignity, Freedom, and Proper rights for All’. This concept got to the nub associated with what human rights suggest to peoples’ lives, something that Eleanor Roosevelt – who had been instrumental in drafting the Universal Declaration – experienced alluded to when she said universal human legal rights begin:

Master Ahmad noted he had met with countless human legal rights survivors from across the world. He gave personal reflections over the importance of making sure survivors’ voices are heard, and anxious that we all have a role to play in creating the conditions for everyone to enjoy their own human rights. Lord Ahmad stressed that, this year, the UK’s resolve to market and protect human legal rights had only been strengthened by the injustices around all of us. He gave an overview from the UK’s work to promote human being rights, which spanned each continent. From Ethiopia to Pakistan, from Iran to Ukraine. From the right to lifetime, to media freedom, to education. in small places…the neighbourhood…the school…the factory, farm, or even office…Unless these rights have got meaning there, they have small meaning anywhere. From the UK’s role in evacuating Afghans in danger following the Taliban takeover in August 2021, to the UK’s global leadership in promoting Freedom of Religion or Perception and Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict, to UK targeted programming to end modern captivity, the UK had, and would certainly continue to, stand up for the human being rights of everyone, everywhere.
