Report: Agreement reached between Italia and UK on swap of driving licences with no test

The British Ambassador to Italy, Ed Llewellyn, said today: A between Italy and the UNITED KINGDOM to allow the exchange of driving licences without the need to have a test has been signed nowadays.   Edward Llewellyn, the British Ambassador to Italia and Inigo Lambertini, the particular Italian Ambassador to the UNITED KINGDOM, met this morning to indication the agreement at the Italian Foreign Ministry in Rome. The agreement will allow cases of driving licences issued in the United Kingdom, Crown Dependencies plus Gibraltar, who live in Italy, to apply to exchange their generating licence for an Italian one*. The agreement also can make provision for exchange of expired licences [up to a period of 5 years/for up to 5 years after their date of expiry] as well as lost plus stolen licences, subject to household procedures.

We are going to update our online Living in Guide and publish information on our social media in the arriving days and weeks because matters progress.

I am delighted in order to announce that, after rigorous work between London and Rome over many a few months, an agreement has been reached using the Italian authorities which will enable a UK driving licence to be exchanged for an Italian one for UK licence holders living in Italy without needing to take any exam, either written or practical. This is great news for British people and UK licence holders living in Italy.

This has already been a complex negotiation. The agreement we have reached could be the result of very close assistance with our Italian colleagues, highlighting the close ties among our countries. I would like in order to thank the Italian Authorities, as well as my colleagues in London and at the British Charge in Rome, for all they have got done to deliver this agreement.

Please make reference to our Q& A for more info on the scope of the Agreement.

We are now working hard with all the Italian Government to bring the particular agreement into effect as soon as possible after ratification on both edges. In the meantime, we are making agreements with the Italian authorities to ensure that UK licences will continue to be recognised beyond 31 December 2022 for a further 12 months.
