Policy paper: Looking North: the UK and the Arctic

In doing so, the UK will focus activity across 4 priority areas: This new framework aims in order to represent evolution, rather than revolution, in the UK’s approach to the particular Arctic. It covers our longstanding interests in the region, particularly at a time of heightened pressure there, with Russia’s intrusion of Ukraine and developing competition from China. The approach will remain dynamic, responsive to changes in the Arctic region plus across the world. Our long-term proper objective remains for the Frosty to be a peaceful and steady region, characterised by assistance. The framework reiterates the UK will remain an active, influential and reliable partner in the Arctic. We will work with our partners and Allies to assist maintain the Arctic as a location that is safe, secure, tranquil, and well-governed, protecting the environment and the communities that will live there.

This document brings together all the UK’s policies plus strategies relating to the Arctic under a single, integrated platform, in line with the Integrated Review. It builds in the Ministry associated with Defence paper The UK’s Defence Contribution in the High North published in March 2022. It outlines the entire range of UK interests in the region, and sets out the extensive priorities and objectives which usually shape our engagement and actions on the Arctic.
