Conversation: Human Rights Day 2022: Foreign Secretary’s speech

That is why I believe in human rights. There are now 8 billion people on this planet, and each and every one should be able to appreciate their rights and essential freedoms, as set out in the Universal Declaration and following Conventions, and I will do most of I can as Foreign Admin to ensure that they can.

  • in Ukraine, civilians gather within shelters from bombardment, as prosecutors gather evidence of atrocities and sexual violence, dedicated by Vladimir Putin’s pushes
  • On Friday, on International Anti-Corruption Day time, the UK government announced a proposal of sanctions targeting individuals involved in serious human rights abuses and violations, plus serious corruption. Sanctions are one of a wide range of diplomatic plus development tools that we uses to promote human rights, to promote freedoms, and to promote democracy.
  • Human rights, underpinned by democratic values and the rule of law, have the power to unite, to change lives, and to change the entire world for the better. As International Secretary I will work unceasingly with all our allies to market and protect them.
  • If you take a step back again for a moment, all this evidence confirms my belief, that will autocracy and repression are always fundamentally wrong, and essentially destabilising. And that human legal rights, and transparent democratic govt, are in the interests of most people, all economies as well as the long term stability of every nation.

Due to the fact human rights cannot be fully enjoyed without democratic freedoms. And democratic freedoms can not be fully realised where there is really a lack of respect for individual rights. We will not shy away through difficult conversations – whether it is on the arbitrary detention, torture or forced labour within supply chains. We will offer advice and expertise to improve human rights adherence – as we do with nations across the world. in Afghanistan, women and girls are also being targeted. Plus erased from all spheres of public life We will continue to shine the spotlight on human legal rights violations – including through the UN Human Rights Authorities. 2022 has been a poor year for the respect to get human rights in many, several countries. in Serbia, brave peaceful protestors always gather on the streets in spite of the brutal crackdown. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard  Corps report that the average associated with those arrested is fifteen. We know many are young girls, who have gathered the courage to call for freedoms they’ve never ever had before and in China and Russia, we’ve seen protestors so concerned about speaking away, that they hold aloft empty sheets of paper As you gather to mark International Human Rights Day: We are going to defend the international human rights system – and use it to hold those who violate or abuse human rights to account. We will strengthen our own partnerships with allies to market and protect rights plus accountability – as we did at the PSVI Conference. Hand-in-hand with standing up for human rights, we are going to continue to build democratic strength, promote civil space, plus nurture the institutions of free and open societies. Central to which, we will continue to assistance and work with civil modern society, particularly human rights defenders and free media.
