The Heads of State or Government of the Member States of the African Union and the European Union met on 17 and 18 february 2022 in Brussels, under the co-chairmanship of Mr. Charles Michel, President of the European Council, and of Mr. Macky Sall, President of the Republic of Senegal and Chairman of the African Union. They remembered the fifth AU-EU summit held in Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire) on 29 and 30 november 2017 and the second meeting of AU-EU foreign ministers held in Kigali (Rwanda) in october 25 and 26, 2021.

Conscious of the unprecedented and growing common opportunities and challenges, the Leaders of the African Union and the European Union have embraced a common vision of a renewed partnership to build a common future, as partners and neighbours. the closest. The two Unions have agreed that their common vision aims to consolidate a renewed partnership for solidarity, security, peace, sustainable and long-term economic development and prosperity for their citizens and their future generations, in bringing together their peoples, regions and organizations. The renewed partnership will be based on geography, recognition of history, human ties, respect for sovereignty, mutual responsibility and respect, shared values, equality between partners and reciprocal commitments.

It aims to be the driving force behind the promotion of their common priorities, their shared values, International Law and the joint preservation of their common interests and public goods. This includes, among others, the security and prosperity of their citizens, the protection of human rights for all, gender equality as well as the empowerment of women in all spheres of life, respect for the principles democracy, good Governance and the rule of law, actions aimed at preserving the climate, the environment and biodiversity, sustainable and inclusive economic growth, the fight against inequalities, support for children’s rights and the inclusion of women, young people and the most disadvantaged. They recognize the importance of food security and nutrition and the African Union has made it the theme of the year 2022.
