Condolence Letter from President Halimah Yacob to Zambian President Edgar Lungu
24 June 2021
His Excellency Edgar Lungu
President
Republic of Zambia
Your Excellency,
On behalf of the people of Singapore, I extend my deepest condolences to Your Excellency and the people of Zambia on the passing of former Zambian President Dr Kenneth Kaunda.
Dr Kaunda was a remarkable statesman who will be remembered for his role as a champion for African independence. He steered the development of a modern Commonwealth, advocating equality and peace in a tumultuous post-colonial period.
Singapore will never forget Dr Kaunda’s support during our early years of independence. Dr Kaunda had many interactions with founding Prime Minister, the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew. Both were leaders of newly independent states and were active participants in Commonwealth meetings. In 1971, Singapore was honoured to receive an official visit by Dr Kaunda as then-President of Zambia on the side lines of the inaugural Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting hosted in Singapore.
Our thoughts are with Your Excellency and the people of Zambia during this period of mourning.
Yours sincerely,
HALIMAH YACOB
