Saint Lucia-New York Consulate spearheads school supplies donation drive

MORE THAN 200 STUDENTS BENEFIT.

Students from the Dennery Infant and Primary Schools received school supplies from a donation drive spearheaded by the Saint Lucia New York Consulate in collaboration with the Make it Happen Foundation, and several contributors from the Diaspora.

The donation includes crayons, bag packs, calculators and notebooks, and was officially handed over to the principals of the schools on March 17.

Consul General of New York, Alvin Landers, who was the lead on the donation drive is a past student of the Dennery Primary School. In a prepared statement, the Consul General expressed gratitude to those who collaborated to make the donation possible especially during this challenging time. Saint Lucians, he noted, rose to the occasion with their countrymen in mind. Instrumental to the cause were, Alphonso Marquis of the Harford St. Lucian Lions Club, Racquel Prospere, Sally Etienne, The Saint Lucia American Association of Connecticut, The Saint Lucia Domino Club, The Lavish Crew members within the Hartford area and the Make it Happen Foundation.

Present at the handing over ceremony was Parliamentary Representative for Dennery South and Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Edmund Estephane; Founder of the Make it Happen Foundation, Mrs. Raquel Du Boulay – Chastanet; Sherol Francis, Principal of the Dennery Primary School; and Mary Flavien, Principal of the Dennery Infant School.

“The Make it Happen Foundation is very pleased to be part of this initiative to help provide assistance to the Dennery Infant School with this donation of educational school supplies,” said Mrs. Chastanet. “We know that the 2020 and 2021 academic years have been particularly challenging for the children especially the younger ones for whom peer socialization is so important. We hope that this small gesture of support helps in some small way to make their journey a little easier.”

Parliamentary Representative for Dennery South, Minister Estephane expressed thanks to all concerned for the donation and used the occasion to remind persons of the importance of taking the COVID-19 vaccine to save lives.

More than 200 students are beneficiaries of the donation drive. Work is ongoing on another donation.
