Public reassured that measures are in place to deal with indiscipline at the BCF

LEGAL STANDARDS GUIDE HOW AN INMATE OUGHT TO BE DISCIPLINED.

The Bordelais Correctional Facility (BCF) is seeking to clear the air and provide the reassurance to the public that there are legal standards in place that guides how an inmate ought to be disciplined should the need arise.  This clarification comes in the wake of a confrontation at one of the male units of the Facility on Wednesday, October 27, around 10:35 a.m.

Further investigation of the incident revealed that a prisoner spat on an officer which apparently triggered a course of action which is not endorsed by the Facility.

BCF Director Mr. Hilary Herman explains that the manner in which the incident was handled was a departure from the norm. He said a staff meeting was convened this week in an effort to reinforce the professional manner in which vexing matters should be handled.

“There are established and effective ways   in which   inmates are traditionally disciplined. Among those measures, we have withdrawing certain privileges, such as seeing visitors, recreational time, buying items from the commissary, or earning wages. Prisoners cannot be denied fundamental human necessities but there are certain measures we can take and that includes counselling, as it may be that the inmate is going through some kind of emotional or mental challenge. These are the measures we employ for the majority of matters that arise”.

The   BCF has recently taken a very transparent approach to some incidents where the public would have had a vested interest. However, some incidents fall strictly within the purview of the administration of the Facility, and will therefore be handled with the expected level of discretion and confidentiality.
