China Opposes U.S.- South Korea Joint Military Exercise

Wang Yi, State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China referred to the issue of the Korean peninsula at his statement delivered on August 6 at the 28th ASEAN Regional Forum.

He said that in view of the fact that the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea had discontinued nuclear test and long-range ballistic missile test-fire for years, the just and reasonable matter of the DPRK’s interests and its concerns should be addressed in a commensurate manner.

He contended that an effective way out of the current deadlock is to create a positive atmosphere for resumed talks and negotiations by easing the anti-DPRK sanctions through activating as soon as possible the relevant provisions that are to reverse the sanctions contained in the United Nations Security Council “resolutions” in respect of the DPRK.

Concerning the U.S.-south Korea joint military exercise, Wang Yi, State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs, pointed out that the joint military exercise is lacking a constructive aspect under the present situation, and stressed that if the U.S. truly wants a restart of dialogue with the DPRK, it should refrain from taking any action that might fuel the aggravated tension.

Wang Yi, State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs reiterated China’s support for political solution of the issue of the Korean peninsula.
