The Government of Vietnam (GOV) recognizes the risks faced by its coastal regions while sustaining the economic growth. The GOV has therefore requested the World Bank for a IBRD financing package of US$350 million via the Integrated Resilient Development Project (IRDP) for the period of 2021-2026. The central objective of this project is to increase access to resilient infrastructure and services in selected provinces of the South Central Coast region in Vietnam including Quang Nam Province. The Dutch Government assigned the team of Royal HaskoningDHV (RHDHV) and Omgeving to provide ‘Strategic Advice to the Quang Nam Provincial People Committee (PPC) on the integrated management and technical solutions for Truong Giang River Subcatchment’. This project supports the Quang Nam Province with developing an integrated, nature sensitive and climate resilient approach to the World Bank funded investments in infrastructure, water transport and regional development of the Eastern part of the province with a focus on the Truong Giang and Tam Ky river basins.

RHDHV and Omgeving have implemented the abovementioned project in two phases from February 2021 to February 2022. The first phase of the project focused on providing expert advice to the Quang Nam PPC on nature-based solutions for riverbank protection and for sustainable river basin management in the wider Tam Ky and Truong Giang river basins. In the second phase, more detailed solutions have been developed and evaluated for integrated flood risk management for the Tam Ky urban area and Chu Lai Open Economic Zone. The output of both project phases has been presented and discussed in several workshops with decision makers and policy developers in the Quang Nam Province.

This project supports to realise relevant Sustainabe Development Goals:
