Johnson Smith updates the Senate on the status of Jamaican nationals in Cuba & the USA following Hurricane Ian

Caption: Leader of Government Business in the Senate, Sen. the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith on Friday, Sept 30 updated the Senate about the status of Jamaican nationals in Cuba and the USA following the passage of Hurricane Ian.
She also used the opportunity to reiterate Jamaica’s solidarity with the Governments of Cuba and the USA. She also extended condolences to both countries on the loss of lives.
With respect to Jamaicans in Florida, the Minister noted that several community groups, including the Global Jamaica Diaspora Council have reached out to several Jamaicans within Florida. The Minister also advised that most Jamaicans are “generally located in counties which were not among the areas worst hit.”
The Minister reported that the Embassy in Havana and the Consulate General in Miami have indicated that there are no casualties within the Jamaican community. She stated that the Embassy continues to check on the wellbeing of 28 scholarship students and approximately 50 self-financed students in Cuba.
