Johnson Smith engages in bilateral discussions with Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan

Jamaica and Japan reiterated their support for the call for reform of the UN Security Council. Johnson Smith stated that the Security Council should be transparent and more responsive and representative of the world today.
Both countries pledge to explore opportunities for cooperating in the area of climate change. Noting that both Jamaica and Japan are both island states, Minister Johnson Smith said that Japan would understand the impact of climate change and the importance of Disaster Risk Management.

They also spoke about candidatures, the upcoming World Assembly for Women Conference (WAW) and cooperation in renewable energies such as solar and wind.
During the discussion, Minister Akimoto congratulated Jamaica on its 60th Anniversary of Independence and spoke about the countries upcoming celebration of 60 years of diplomatic relations in 2024. This also coincides with the designation of 2024 as Japan-CARICOM Friendship Year.
