Iceland strongly condemns Russia’s episodes on Ukraine

The Ministry’s consular services have been in contact with 28 individuals in Ukraine, including 16 Icelandic people, and will continue to work closely with the consular services of some other Nordic countries. Iceland will carry on its support for Ukraine, by taking full part within international sanctions. Iceland may respond to humanitarian needs by providing EUR 1 million meant for humanitarian support in Ukraine. This is in addition to a EUR 200, 000 contribution to NATO’s Trust Fund for Ukraine Professional Development Programme.
The Government of Iceland strongly condemns Russia’s attacks on Ukraine and expresses serious concern for the destruction and suffering that Russia’s intrusion of Ukraine will certainly cause.
“Our thoughts are with the innocent people in Ukraine who suffer this unprovoked invasion by Russia. Iceland strongly condemns Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine. We all call on Russia to stop its military action, which can have devastating consequences. Russia’s attack is a serious violation of international law, which demands a strong response by the international community, ” says Katrín Jakobsdóttir, Prime Minister.
Yesterday and today the Ministry for Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian Ambassador to reiterate Iceland’s position.
NATO has taken necessary actions by increasing and building up its response and protection capabilities. The North Atlantic Council met this morning in order to consult on the basis of Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty. Under this article, any Number one ally can request consultations whenever their territorial integrity, political independence or security is threatened. The strengthening of NATO‘s collective defence position could result in increased activity plus visibility of Allied factors on Allied territory.
“Russia’s attack on Ukraine is really a serious threat to Euro security. We stand in full solidarity with our allies plus closest partners and we will take full part in global sanctions, that are to be issued immediately. Iceland reiterates the unwavering support to Ukraine and condemns this attack on Ukraine and its territorial integrity. We call on The ussr to withdraw its military forces immediately from Ukraine, “ says Thórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörd Gylfadóttir, Minister regarding Foreign Affairs.
