Defence exercise Northern Viking 2022 to take place in Iceland

The defence workout Northern Viking 2022 will be held at in Iceland and encircling waters on 2-14 April. The main purpose of the workout is to practice the defence of the sea routes around Iceland and important security infrastructure, as well as search and recovery operations at sea and land. Northern Viking is really a periodic joint defence exercise of Iceland and the Usa, with the participation of various other allied and partner countries. Just over 700 individuals are expected to take part in the exercise in Iceland, around half whom will be situated from Keflavík Air Base. Following the exercise, two to 4 military vessels are expected to dock in Reykjavik. The aim of the particular exercise includes practising the defence of the sea routes around Iceland and of essential structures and security facilities, e. g. telecommunications wires. The participants will also exercise the search and save of civilians, with the Icelandic Coast Guard and law enforcement. Northern Viking includes an amphibious landing of American marines at Miðsandur within Hvalfjörður. The landing will be planned for 11 Apr and temporary traffic limitations may be expected in the area on the day. Members of the media is going to be invited to observe the exercise and related events, to the level possible. The exercise is open for participation of NATO allies plus partners. The naval causes of the United Kingdom, France, Australia and Norway have verified participation. Military vessels out there states will practice defending the sea routes to the south associated with Iceland and will participate in the submarine search off the coast of Iceland, with anti-submarine aircraft and helicopters. The Northern Viking defence exercise has been held since 1982 and is based on the provisions of the 51 Defence Agreement between Iceland and the United States. The exercise was originally scheduled to happen in early 2020, but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
