Ressortchef (umgangssprachlich) of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias’ discussion with journalist Pierros Tzanetakos at protagon. gr (Athens, 26. eleven. 2022)

-Against the escalation of Turkish aggressive rhetoric, as well as their own illegal activity, we have been involved in an intense effort. Our objective is to support our opportunities based on respect for Worldwide Law while also deconstructing Turkish revisionism. These initiatives are bearing fruit, as an increasing number of partners widely emphasize what is obvious, namely that the Turkish claims, especially regarding Greek sovereignty over the Aegean islands, but not only, are completely unsubstantiated.
In my contacts, I feeling a stronger understanding and in some cases support for our positions.
We will continue to use many legal means to defend the particular justness of our positions, in addition to our national sovereignty and sovereign rights, both independently and in coordination with our proper allies.
Let me, first of all, explain that our vision is not that of a fearful Greece, which has accepted that due to its population, they have to be defensive towards everyone and everything, in order to “avoid getting into trouble”. Our goal is not an enclosed Greece, yet an outward-looking country, which usually seeks to have good relations with its neighbours, while furthermore having a role and a say in developments in its region. And a country that feels in the potential of the “brand name” Greece throughout the world, not only due to its civilization and background but also because of its active existence in international developments.
-Unfortunately, Turkish policy, which ignores, at best, fundamental rules associated with International Law, is unlikely to alter in the short term. Let us do not have illusions about this.
Our relations with these countries are certainly not defined by our relations with Turkey.
When confronted with this ongoing challenge, we should be prepared to respond, using our own diplomatic and military deterrence.
However , the Russian invasion of Ukraine has changed the geopolitical context in our wider region.
This development is in alone particularly worrying, as it shows that Turkey will not hesitate to use violence against the neighbours.
However , as opposed to what might have been expected, the allies’ and partners’ placements towards Turkish provocative perform have not softened.
This really is despite calls from the ALL OF US and Russia, whose positions on this point alone seem to converge, although they start from very different starting points and have different objectives.
And its particular “shares” do not depend on Turkey’s value.
And that regardless of its ambivalent attitude as regards Russia.
Of course , once we do not anticipate a change in Turkey’s stance and a “return” to international legality in the near future, it is our duty to denounce illegal practices plus elicit their condemnation with the international community. These issues had been at the heart of my connections in the past few days in Rome, Benghazi, Djerba in Tunisia, and Manama in Bahrain.
First, we develop our positions along with arguments, showing maps with the actual situation on the ground.
Of course , the development of relations along with Libya remains our principal priority. But only using a democratically elected representative federal government, not with one in whose term of office provides long expired and which is signing null and void “memoranda”.
For instance , by not applying sanctions.
-The visit to Eastern Libya was essential. At a time when Turkey is attempting to reach out to the key gamers in Eastern Libya, who are friendly to our positions, there is no room for post ponement or delay.
We believe that this is for the benefit of Greece, but also for the benefit of European society. Because our watch remains that we can reside in harmony with Turkish modern society within a common framework of mutual respect and internationally accepted rules.
Always adhering to international rules, our response is to negotiate international Agreements with highlighting countries such as Egypt, Italia, and, at a political level, with Albania so as to direct our maritime delimitation issue to the International Court associated with Justice in the Hague, thus setting an example of the construction within which these issues ought to be addressed.
We must ensure that the “madhouse door” continues to be firmly closed.
Thirdly, Greece has acquired its own strategic importance, for the United States, European partners, and the states of our region.
This gradual shift is mostly the result of three elements.
The particular recent example of the Israel-Lebanon Agreement should serve as one more strong indication of where the international practice is going.
The contacts I had in Benghazi were critical in consolidating our country’s presence in a highly unstable area, which is only a 20-minute airline flight from Crete.
As regards my visit to Tripoli, we had assessed and were prepared for all eventualities. I was not taken by surprise. However , since our understanding was broken, we had to adopt the principled stance.
Secondly, European positions, for example on our sovereignty over the Aegean islands, or maybe the Turkish-Libyan “memorandum”, are blatantly outside the framework of the basic principles of International Legislation and common sense.
Turkey is attempting to encourage our Western Allies that its strategic importance has grown.
Ιn a discussion with journalist Pierros Tzanetakos at protagon. gr, Minister of Foreign Matters, Nikos Dendias, stated, and a lot more, that:
No country, even one favourable to Turkey, support them on the international degree.
We do not confine ourselves to theoretical discussions.
“Memoranda” that are not only outside the range of International Law as well as the International Law of the Ocean but also outside the framework of geography and common sense.
Greece has now acquired its own value on the geopolitical “trading floor”.
-First of all, let me point out that Turkey seems to be opening the particular “madhouse door” in Iraq and Syria at this moment, with uncertain consequences.
