Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement on the occasion of Europe Day (Athens, 09.05.2021)

Today marks the 71st anniversary of the historic Robert Schuman Declaration, which laid the foundations for the most ambitious and successful project enhancing cooperation among states in modern history.

This year’s anniversary coincides with  the 40th anniversary of Greece’s accession to the core of the European edifice. A historic moment that was the vindication of a national goal, but also a fundamental step for the social and economic course of our country.

It is at the same time a year with a special symbolic meaning for our national existence. It marks the 200th anniversary of the beginning of the Greek Revolution of 1821, which we, Greeks honour and celebrate with respect for our history, pride for what we have achieved and confidence for the future.

In the same spirit, we Europeans should reflect on our common course so far and plan our common European future, being proud of the common area of peace and cooperation built on World War II-torn Europe and of our great common achievements. But we should also be fully aware that, in order for Europe to tackle modern challenges effectively, the European edifice should become more solid, our common cause more dynamic and our voice on the world stage stronger.

The Conference on the Future of Europe, which begins today, marks a first step in shaping a new Europe, inspired by the successes of our common path and confidently facing new challenges.

In this effort that begins to further promote our common European future, Greece will be actively present due to its experience gained after 40 years of participation in the ever-evolving European venture, in its active regional role in consolidating stability and cooperation and its timeless and active commitment to the European idea.

The European continent, but also the whole world, are yet experiencing both the economic and social impact of the pandemic and the difficult period of reconstruction that will follow. To cope with this demanding situation, but also a series of other complex and growing challenges in many areas, the European family should bravely throw off the shackles of its past and make a qualitative leap towards a more solidary, coherent and ultimately more powerful Europe.

A more dynamic Europe, which invests strategically in an environment of prosperity, democracy and stability for the whole continent.

A Union capable of meeting the serious geopolitical challenges in its neighbourhood and the world and fulfilling its role in regional and global developments, consistent with its fundamental principles, with credibility and with a single voice. Aiming for a Europe that meets the vision of its pioneers, but also the expectations of European citizens and future generations.
