Ministry of Foreign Affairs announcement on the joint participation of Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias and Minister of National Defence Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos at the extraordinary NATO Ministerial Meeting (14 April 2021)

Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias and Minister of National Defence Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos participated today, Wednesday, 14 April, in the extraordinary joint session of NATO Foreign Affairs and Defence Ministers, which they attended via videoconference from the Chiefs of Staff Council Room of the Ministry of National Defence.

The main topic of the meeting was the developments in Afghanistan and the timeline for the withdrawal of Alliance forces from the country.

During his intervention, the Minister of Foreign Affairs underscored that the North Atlantic Alliance should at this stage also reflect on the nature of its future presence in Afghanistan, stressing that a security void in the country should be avoided, as it would jeopardise the progress achieved in Afghanistan to date. In this context, he referred in particular to the rights of women and minors.

He also added that such a scenario would have repercussions for NATO member states, especially in terms of increasing migrant flows towards Europe.
