Greece, as a pre-eminent maritime nation with the largest merchant fleet in the world, attaches great importance to free and unhindered shipping on a global level. For this reason it was mobilised immediately with regards to the major issue that has arisen with the suspension of operation of the Suez Canal due to the container ship Ever Given’s running aground.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in cooperation with the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy and the Hellenic Shipowners Association of Tugs, Salvage, Antipollution and OSVs, notified the Administration of the Suez Canal, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, that Greece stands ready to provide all possible help and assistance to the friendly country of Egypt to restore shipping, whether through tugging the Ever Given or through dredging works.
In any case, Greece is monitoring developments closely and hopes that the Suez Canal will reopen for international shipping very soon.
